Sierra Leone is situated on the west coast of Africa. It is bordered with Guinea to the north and east, Liberia to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. Its government is slowly re-establishing its authority after its recent decade-long civil war that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (about one-third of the population). However Columbian drug cartels are now reported to be moving into Sierra Leone, using it as a base to ship drugs to Europe.

Hence we are reluctant to join with others in regarding Sierra Leone as one of the safest places to visit in Africa. As a destination it offers pristine beaches, although little else, and, in truth, Africa has no shortage of idyllic beach destinations.
