Réunion is an island lying in the Indian Ocean , approximately 220km south-west of Mauritius and 800 km east of Madagascar. It is volcanic in origin and mountainous, with two major mountain zones, the Cirques of Cilanos, Salazie and Mafate, and the active volcano Piton-de-la-fornaise, which erupts fairly regularly. It remains an overseas department of France.

Although the island's economy is dominated by the sugarcane industry, tourism, especially from Europe, is becoming a significant economic factor. However, although Réunion fits the description of a tropical island, it isn’t really one to rival either the Seychelles or Mauritius. The counter side to this is, of course, that t is not blighted by overcrowded mega-resorts either.
