Libya is situated on the coast of North Africa and is the fourth largest country on the continent. It borders with Egypt in the east, Sudan in the southeast, Chad and Niger in the south, Algeria to the west and Tunisia in the northwest and the Mediterranean Sea in the north.

Led by the government of the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, Libya had the highest standard of living in Africa, as a consequence of the oil that is the driving force in its economy.

Although its ancient capital city of Tripoli, designed by the Romans, remains one of the most exotic destinations on the planet, the country as a whole cannot really be considered as a safe tourist destination, and certainly is not one that is open to the independent traveller, especially considering the civil war that has recently been raging here.
