Strictly known by its French title, Côte d’Ivoire, The Republic of the Ivory Coast, on the south coast of the western bulge of Africa, is bordered to the north by Mali and Burkina Faso, to the east by Ghana, to the south the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by Liberia and Guinea. Even after declaring independence in 1960, the Ivory Coast retained close economic  ties with France, and became one of the most prosperous African counties.

However, even though over the centuries the country suffered through very little political turmoil, more recently a few poorly-timed military coups and subsequent internal conflicts have increased its national debt, and dramatically curtailed its once profitable tourism industry, based on its coastal scenery, beautiful national parks and abundant wildlife.
