Gaining independence from France in 1977, Djibouti is located in Eastern Africa (the ‘Horn of Africa’), bordering the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea on the east, Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the north and northwest and Somalia to the southeast. Much of the country is a vast desert wasteland with virtually no arable land.

Djibouti's economy revolves almost totally around the shipping and refuelling industries, as it has few natural resources of its own.

Potential tourist attractions in Djibouti include the beaches and tropical islands along the coastal areas. In addition, there are a few active volcanoes a few miles inland. However it cannot be considered as a serious tourist destination.
