The Democratic Republic of Congo is more often known as DRC, or Congo-Kinshasa (to distinguish it from the genuinely democratic – and neighbouring – Republic of Congo), although this war-torn country has previously been called the Belgian Congo, followed by Zaire. The third largest country in Africa, it is bordered by the Central African Republic to the north, Sudan to the northeast, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east, Zambia to the south and southeast, Angola to the southwest, and Angola and the Congo Republic to the west.

Containing, as it does, the second largest rainforest in the world (after that of the Amazon) and the Congo River itself, which is 2,733 miles long, of which some 900 miles is navigable, together with a huge variety of simply stunning scenery, this could, in theory, be one of Africa’s most amazing tourist destinations. Sadly, in practice, it is probably the country that one would least wish to visit.
