Situated in central Africa, Chad has Libya lying to the North, Niger & Nigeria to the west, Cameroon to the southwest, Central African Republic to the southeast and Sudan to the east. It has three distinct geographical regions, dry plains and desert to the central and north of the country, mountains in the northwest, and lowlands in the south.

After gaining its independence from France in 1960, Chad then suffered from decades of ethnic warfare, together with invasions from neighbouring Libya, and the future of this unstable land remains very uncertain.

At least 80% of Chad's population relies on subsistence farming, although recent Chinese investment has been directed towards developing its oil reserves. Chad cannot be considered to be a tourist destination.
