Tunisia

Located on the northern coast of Africa, Tunisia has boundaries with Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. The Atlas Mountains divide the country into two regions, the well-watered north and the semi-arid south. Historically a French protectorate, Tunisia became an independent state in 1956.

With over 1200 km of coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia is home to seemingly endless sandy beaches, and – an important ingredient – perfect vacation weather. Seaside resorts and towns offer a wide range of waterfront hotels, and activities like boating, fishing, sailing, scuba diving and windsurfing.

Until recently, tourism has played a large part in Tunisia’s economy, but recent civil unrest (January 2011) has put a complete halt to this, with most tourists rapidly being evacuated. It remains to be seen just how soon the country can recover its previous position in this respect.
