Following in the Footsteps of Livingstone
- 14 Nights Zambia Safari
- Approx cost £4600 per head + £800 for the optional Edwardian safari extension
David Livingstone is probably Africa ’s most famous European-origin explorer, and his various expeditions are intimately woven into the Zambian landscape. AfricaAway is proud to offer a specially designed itinerary that enables the visitor to experience much of what Livingstone discovered for the first time (by a white man), in a landscape which in many cases is little changed from Livingstone’s day. You will be supplied with detailed illustrated notes giving the full background to your visit and the route taken. The itinerary requires a minimum of four guests, sharing two to a hut, and runs between June and October.
Details
Your journey interweaves Livingstone’s routes and experiences into a
fairly conventional safari itinerary of the kind that is described
in the various modules encountered in our Create
Your Own Safari section.
It begins on your arrival at Livingstone International airport, with
a transfer to Tongabezi Lodge which is situated at the edge of the Upper
Zambezi river, some 20 minutes’ drive from the airport, although there
is also the option of travelling via the Mosi oa Tunya National Park,
giving you your one opportunity to see (white) rhino in Zambia during
this brief game drive (not to mention many other species, including
multitudes of elephant). At Tongabezi you can relax in the unashamed luxury
of one of their riverside cottages or thatched houses, recovering from
your overnight flight out to Zambia. An evening river cruise, accompanied
by sundowners, completes your first day.
On the following morning you will be taken by boat to Livingstone Island,
situated right on the lip of the Falls themselves, approaching this wonder
of the natural world travelling by exactly the same route as did David
Livingstone (although he travelled by makoro, or native canoe), when he
first discovered it. After partaking of a light lunch on the Island ,
you will then be transferred to the Zambezi
Sun Hotel, where you will
spend your second night. From the Zambezi Sun the Falls are only a few
minutes’ walk away, and during the next 24 hours you will have ample opportunity
to explore the awesome, and unspoilt, splendour of the Falls and their
surrounding area. On the following day you will transfer to Songwe
Village Camp for your final night in the Livingstone area. En route you will visit
Chief Mukuni’s village, and other locations also visited by Livingstone,
and on the following morning, prior to your early afternoon flight out,
you can visit the colourful Maramba market.
From Livingstone your flight takes you to the Lower
Zambezi National Park, where you will follow the course of the Lower Zambezi downstream
to its confluence with the Luangwa River, much as did Livingstone, spending
two nights at Chongwe
River Camp, one at Sausage
Tree Camp, one at Kulefu
Camp, and two at Redcliff Camp, before flying out from the Kulefu airstrip
to Mfuwe airport, for the South Luangwa National Park. Activities that
you can undertake here are described in our section entitled Zambezi
Safaris,
located in the Create Your Own Safari section of the website. Whilst staying
in the Lower Zambezi there is also the optional opportunity to spend three
nights in a magical tented bush camp located away from the river, in the
heart of the Park, which recreates the atmosphere of a true Edwardian
era safari camp – somewhat after Livingstone’s time, true, but the closest
that you’re going to get to actually experiencing how he lived and travelled.
Your journey then concludes in the South
Luangwa National Park, viewing
exactly the same sort of game, habitats etc that Livingstone would
have seen, and visiting the precise spot where he crossed the Luangwa
river during his ill-fated final expedition. Here you will stay at Tafika
Lodge for two nights, before journeying on foot to their Chikoko
Tree bush camp, for a further two nights, before returning
to Mfuwe and onward to Lusaka at the end of your journey. South Luangwa
is Zambia ’s prime game viewing area, and the home of the African walking
safari - a memorable conclusion to an epic journey. A further discussion
of these two activities may be found in the Game
Viewing Safaris and
Classic Walking Safaris modules of our Create Your Own Safari section.
