Scrub Hares are widely distributed throughout the South Luangwa Valley and other areas in Zambia. They are purely nocturnal animals and are often not seen in the day unless they are disturbed or flushed out from under a bush Scrub Hareor thicket where it lies flat to the ground, well camouflaged.

They are often referred to incorrectly as a rabbits, although there are in fact very few species of rabbits recorded on the continent. Scrub Hares do not excavate burrows, and give birth to well developed young, whereas a newly born rabbit is naked and helpless, hence the burrow.
