Eland are the largest of the African antelope, with a shoulder height of up to 1.5m or more and a weight of 680kg plus. The male Eland have a large hump above the shoulders and a noticeable fold of loose skin hanging from the throat called a ‘dewlap’. Both males and females have twisted horns, which, unlike those of other antelope are straight, rather than curved. The horns of the males tend to be shorter, thicker and straighter than those of the female.

ElandIt is possible to see Eland when visiting the South Luangwa National Park; however, they tend to be very shy and timid and will run when they catch sight of game vehicles. The best chance of seeing them is on a walking safari around woodland or fringes of forests.

They usually move around in small herds of up to 12, but they have also been seen in herds of up to 100.

Despite their substantial size, Eland are actually great jumpers (often from a standing position without a run up) and they can move extremely fast.

Although Eland will drink, they are not dependent on being near a water source. They can actually obtain all their moisture requirements from leaves and fruit that they consume.
