Game Viewing Safaris

4 nights from £395

We have intentionally restricted our game viewing itineraries, below, to a maximum of 4 nights. Although game viewing is the most popular single reason for visiting Africa, in Zambia at least, with its remarkable richness of wildlife, you will have seen virtually everything that you could hope to see in four days, and will be more than ready to exchange the experience of bumping along through the bush in a 4WD for other activities, such as walking in the bush, canoeing on the Lower Zambezi, visiting a local village (and school), seeing Victoria Falls, and so on. Accordingly the itineraries below are intended to be coupled with one or more of the other, 3-6 night, itineraries that we provide (and which are listed in the panel on the right hand side). The prices quoted are all high season prices, and, where applicable, the cost of a return flight to Lusaka – ~£150 per person – should also be included.

Module A1The South Luangwa Encounter - 4 nights for a total of £395 per person

Sundowner Your safari starts immediately you arrive at Mfuwe, usually after a short internal flight transfer, with a brief drive from the airport to your first camp, situated just outside the main gate to the South Luangwa National Park. You will spend your first two nights at Flatdogs Camp, taking twice-daily game drives into the Park, enjoying excellent food and drink (sundowners on the banks of the Luangwa River a speciality), and probably making good use of the swimming pool (not a common feature at safari camps).

You will then take a game drive that will also serve to transfer you to Wildlife Camp to continue the game viewing experience from this latter camp’s location in its own private territory on the banks of the Luangwa River, with the additional opportunity of spending a night in a real bush camp – sleeping in a fly tent, with communal long drop loos and bucket showers. After two nights at Wildlife Camp you will then be transferred to the start of the next phase of your safari.

Module A2The Zambian Explorer Safari - 4 nights for a total of £739 per person

LionessYour safari begins with two nights at Flatdogs Camp, as above, followed by two nights at Puku Ridge – a top end bush camp situated in the heart of the South Luangwa National Park itself close to, and twinned with, the Chichele Presidential Lodge itself. In this way your second two days’ game viewing can take place in a different sector of the Park. Puku Ridge is located on a ridge overlooking a spectacular game-rich flood plain, and is one of the very few bush camps to remain open all year around. Its description as a tented camp belies its unashamed luxury and attention to detail, and provides an abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities.

Module A3The Luangwa River Safari - 4 nights for a total of £944 per person

Hippo Your safari begins with one night at Flatdogs Camp, as described above, followed by two nights at Kapani Lodge, long time home of the late Norman Carr, the pioneer of walking safaris in Africa. Kapani is an exclusive, private camp situated on the banks of one of the many ox-bow lagoons in the South Luangwa, and is situated a short drive from the main gate entrance to the South Luangwa National Park . Your final night is spent at one of South Luangwa ’s newest lodges, the innovatively designed Luangwa River Lodge, probably best described as ‘African bush chic’. Luangwa River Lodge is located on the far bank of the Luangwa River itself, and access into the Park is achieved by means of a short boat transfer to a waiting vehicle, rather than a drive through one of the Park’s access gates, ensuring a flying start to your game drive.

Module A4	The Robin Pope Experience - 4 nights for a total of £1156

Giraffe Your safari begins with two nights at Robin Pope’s legendary Nkwali Camp, situated on Robin’s own land in a marvellous spot on the banks of the river. Game drives from Nkwali can enter the Park via the main gate, or into a quite different sector, by crossing the river on a pontoon. It concludes with a game drive into the heart of the Park, taking you to Robin’s other well-known camp – Tena Tena, described by the London Times as "altogether beyond superlatives . . . one of the best safari camps in the whole of Africa", at which you will spend your final two nights, before moving on to the next phase of your visit.

Please note that one of the ‘Classic Walking Safaris’, described elsewhere, is the Robin Pope Mobile Walking Safari, which begins with two nights at Nkwali, and ends with 3 nights at Tena Tena, much as above, together with five nights on the actual mobile walking safari itself. The cost of these additional six nights is £1944.

During any of the above sample game viewing itineraries it will usually be possible to take one or two morning or afternoon walks, if desired, together with a visit to the local village (and school).
