Lying directly across the equator, and home to Karen Blixen’s ‘Out of Africa’, Kenya remains one of Africa’s principal holiday and safari destinations, despite the problems caused there recently by international terrorism and internal crime. Wildlife safaris can be conducted by vehicle, boat, on foot, by hot air balloon and even on camel back. For moderate ability climbers, Mt Kenya may prove easier than neighbouring Kilimanjaro, while adrenalin enthusiasts can sample white water canoeing and rafting. History buffs can get a glimpse of what it might have been like in colonial times, by travelling aboard a restored Victorian train. Finally, beach bums can explore Kenya ’s magical coastline with the Indian Ocean .

So far as game viewing is concerned, the Masai Mara Game Reserve (location of the BBC’s ‘Big Cat Diary’) is probably the most popular, although a visit to Amboseli, Tsavo, and Samburu can be equally rewarding. The migration of wildebeest is an overwhelming sight. Each year, millions of these animals make their trek between the Masai Mara and Tanzania 's Serengeti Plains. The weather dictates the timing, but it occurs sometime between July and September. While watching the wildebeest travel, you can also see huge herds of zebra and prides of lions, as well as crocodiles on the Mara River.
